BOOK REVIEW
Name of the book: The Alchemist
Author: Paulo Coelho
Publisher: Harper Torch
Place: Brazil
Year of Publication: 1998
Page: 1-163p
Price: 169.00
Summary of Book:
O Alquimista, famously known as The
Alchemist is a book of great philosophy. The story is about an Andalusian
shepherd boy named Santiago. Santiago sees a recurring dream and thinks of it
as a prophetic one. He asks a Gypsy fortune teller about the meaning of this
dream in a nearby town. The women interprets the dream and tells him that the
dream indicates that he soon is going to find great treasure at the Egyptian
pyramids.
Early into his journey, he meets an old king named Melchizedek, or the king of
Salem, who tells him to sell his sheep, so as to travel to Egypt, and
introduces the idea of a Personal Legend. Your Personal Legend "is what
you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what
their Personal Legend is."
He reaches Africa and meets a boy who claims that he would be able to take him
to the Egyptian pyramids. But instead the man robs him of the money that he
made by selling his sheeps. Santiago then starts working at a crystal merchant
so as to make enough money to be able to reach the pyramids.
On the way, Santiago meets an Englishman who has came in search of an Alchemist
and continues his journey with his new companion. The boy on the way then meets
an Arabian girl names Fatima, and falls in love with her. Later on he also
proposes a marriage. But she denies and tells him that she will only marry him
after he had completed his journey. He gets frustrated at first but then he
learns that true love not stops one from accomplishing their personal destiny
but it supports them to pursue it.
The boy then meets a wise Alchemist who teaches him about finding his true
self. Together they continue their journey and also come to face the warring
tribes where the boy is forced to demonstrate his oneness with the soul of the
world by turning himself into a simoom before he is allowed to continue his
journey. When he starts digging in the sight of the pyramids, he is robbed yet
again and this time he learns (SPOILER ALERT ) from the leader of the thieves
that the treasure of his dreams laid in the same ruined church where he had
first started his journey.
.
My Opinion:
Talking about my opinion, I loved the book. Being honest
with this opinion I'd say that the book is worth a read. You must read this
book.
This book let's you learn big lessons of your life with such a good plot. The
characters in the book are wisely chosen. It teaches you about how different
things the life has stored for you. All the things happening have a meaning
behind them and in order to live your life to the fullest you need to learn the
meanings. Maybe all these reasons sum up together to make this book a best
seller.
